RTA signs contract with Emirates NBD to issue combi-cards

22 November 2010

The Roads & Transport Authority (RTA) has signed a contract with Emirates NBD Group covering the issuance of a co-branded combi-card; the first of its type in the Middle East, combining the features of a bank credit card and the unified fare collection card (Nol Card). The new card enables holders to benefit from all benefits and features of the credit card as well as the contactless smart pay card beside the possibility of using it to pay the fare of various public transport modes, and parking fees.

The Contract was signed on behalf of RTA by Chairman of the Board and Executive Director H.E. Mattar Al Tayer and for EmiratesNBD Mr. Richard Anthony Pudner CEO of EmiratesNBD Group.

A statement to this effect was made in a press conference held yesterday at RTA Head Office in the presence of the CEO of RTA Technical Support Services Sector Abdullah Al Madani, Emirates NBD Group Deputy CEO Jamal bin Ghulaita, Senior Vice Chairman and Head of Cards Section, Emirates NBD Group Mr. Sivaram, Director of RTA Automated Fare Collection Card Mohammed Al Mudharreb, and senior officials from both parties.

Commenting on the Contract, Al Madani said: Selecting Emirates NBD was made following an extensive study of all offers made by the bank to its customers base along with the quality of services included. Last May, all local banks were invited to submit proposals in order to review their services and identify their capabilities in carrying out this initiative, and we concluded that that Emirates NBD was the leading local bank that has the potentials that make it one of the most advanced banks in terms of features, high profile within the local market, and scope in terms of the number of customers and branches spread all over the UAE. This paved the foundation for our selection, particularly as our main objective hinges on spreading the combined card among the largest possible number of customers.

By virtue of this Contract, the Bank is authorized to issue combined credit cards that have the same functionality of Nol Blue Cards; availing customers the opportunity of enjoying the features of two cards in one card i.e. the payment functions of the credit card, and the smart card featuring contactless payment technology. Moreover, holders will have the flexibility of using the card in availing the services of multi-modal transit systems, and pay the parking fees, over and above the feature of automatic recharging of customers account balance needed to avail RTA services, added Al Madani.

Elaborating the key objectives envisaged through the combined card Al Madani said: The co-branded credit and Nol card will greatly contribute to expediting the processing of transactions, minimizing the error margin during the payment of fares and parking fees through the customers credit card, recharging the account balance of mass transit modes users, and minimizing the number of cards carried by the public.

This new combi-card puts both RTA and the bank at the forefront of the e-money market and the card will likely be well received by the market as it is a unique transport-retail payment card that allows customers to manage all their needs smoothly. The growing stature of Dubai as a global business hub prioritizes the provision of a safe and smooth transport system. As a result, it became imperative to provide an effective & an integrated transport system capable of achieving the vision & serving the vital interests of the Emirate said Al Madani in a concluding statement.

For his part Jamal bin Ghulaita, Emirates NBD Group Deputy CEO, praised the cooperation with the RTA; which runs one of the best public transportation systems in the world. "Our partnership will leverage the combined strengths of our two organizations, bringing real value and convenience to our customers. It also enables us to provide unparalleled benefits and value to UAE commuters on a daily basis, he mentioned.

One of our key philosophies has always been developing products that give customers superior value with benefits and rewards. The Emirates NBD RTA Combi-Card will be developed with this same focus to provide maximum convenience and time-saving features for todays fast-paced lifestyles.

This product will not only provide customer a convenience interface with RTAs Metro, parking meters, water taxis ... etc, but also give the customer the added convenience of all card benefits such as insurance, convenient payment options, and superior value through exclusive discounts etc. The combi-cards will be issued in both a credit and debit variant and we hope to launch this as early as the second quarter of 2011.

We are honored and pleased that RTA has recognized our strengths and past achievements in their search for a strategic partner for this venture. Although competition was intense, our knowledge and expertise in the cards market together with our strong infrastructure capabilities, made us the most attractive choice. We are excited and look forward to working on this new initiative and introduce this pioneering and forward-thinking concept to the UAE market
